How NOT To Market To Patients With “Core” Problems

A couple of weeks ago I did a talk for a group of Fitness Business Owners at an event here in Orlando (at Disney)…

I was asked to speak about Facebook Ads – but I ended up speaking for nearly two hours about things way more important than Facebook Ads – one of them being the fundamental principle that determines the success of marketing done on ANY platform.

What is that?

It’s what you say in your marketing – also known as the Marketing Message.

Take this example:

If you’re trying to fill up a wellness class at your clinic aimed at helping postpartum mum’s… it is tempting to market your class (or even program of care) as something like “Improve Your Core after pregnancy” OR, “get your core back after pregnancy”.

Yet, this is very unlikely to work.

So why wouldn’t this marketing message work?

After all, any lady who has had a baby and a subsequent post partum issue is likely to have a weakness at their core, right?

Well, yes, they do have a problem with their core after pregnancy.

But, the problem is that is not the way they see it…

Do they really lay awake at night worrying about getting their “core” back?

Or, do they lay awake at night worrying about their long term back pain… their inability to play with their baby without pain… their lack of energy… and now concerned that they’re a shadow of the person they were pre-baby – even now beginning to worry about if-and-when they’ll ever get back to the person they know they could be – the one they were before the baby?

Of course, it is the latter.

That is what they really want.

That is the problem your class solves.

And the key point here is that the mention of CORE and POSTPARTUM is our language.

(The language of a PT).

It is not the language used by a 30 year old lady having back pain following a pregnancy.

My point?

To be successful with your marketing you have too use THEIR language.

For example I could say to you,

“How to use Direct Response marketing and implement the message, media and market philosophy to win more patients”.

Or, I could just say, “how to get patients even if the local doctor won’t refer to you”.

Or, I could say, “how to get cash paying patients so you can make more profit with less hassle”.

Or, I could say, “how to get all your own patients so you can tell the insurance companies to go to hell”.

Which would resonate with you more? 🙂

Physical Therapy Hiring Book: “The 7, 30 and 90 Day Staff Onboarding Process”

This is an excerpt from Chapter 11 of my second, Amazon No.1 Best Selling Hiring Book for Physical Therapists, “The Physical Therapy Hiring Solution – How To Recruit, Hire & Train World-Class People You Can Trust”.

“You’ve picked your A Player, now you have to on-board them. That involves a mix of training and coaching. What is the difference? Training is telling someone exactly what to do. You’re often teaching them something from scratch. Coaching is optimizing what they’ve learned.

As a business owner, I try to spend more time coaching than training. I leave my senior staff to the training and then I get involved later when itis time to optimize what the new member has learned. Of course, if it’s your first hire you’re going to have to do both.

Despite everything that we’ve just covered, I firmly believe that what happens next is the one single thing that will determine how successful this person is going to be.

Tip: what you do from now on is perhaps more important than what they do. If you abdicate the tasks required of this person, without first making sure they are able to perform, then you’ll be setting this person up for failure.

With that in mind, I’ve created a 90-day “foolproof” onboarding system that I want to share with you. It is broken up into four distinct parts which provide guidelines for the training and coaching you’ll need to do or oversee.

We’ll look at the first 7, 30, and 90 days – and then, how you’ll continue to optimize thereafter. What happens in the first 7 days is usually more important than what happens in the first 30, and what happens in the first 30 is more important than what happens in the first 90 days.”

Hiring Book For Physical Therapists: “What Questions To Ask In The Interview Process”

This is an excerpt from Chapter 10 of my second, Amazon No.1 Best Selling Hiring Book for Physical Therapists, “The Physical Therapy Hiring Solution – How To Recruit, Hire & Train World-Class People You Can Trust”.

“At the beginning of the hiring process, I am simply looking to rule out the candidates who have applied for the wrong job. I’m looking to narrow down my candidate pool, from the 20 or so, to the 7 or 8 who are qualified and able to fulfill the role. There is a difference.

I do this by “screening” the initial candidates on the phone. Whether I am looking for a physical therapist, a front of house/admin, an operations manager for my marketing company, or a financial controller, I always start by narrowing down the pool of candidates to ones that are obviously more suitable.

Key point: I do not do this part. I will ask someone in my office to do it for me. I’ll ask one of my front desk people to do it for me, as it really is about getting a feel for who the person is and what they’re looking for. What’s more, trying to get 20 people on the phone is a mammoth task in and of itself!

The time it takes getting hold of all these candidates is often underestimated, as you’re often playing phone tag with people who could be great candidates. I trust the judgment of my staff implicitly, and this is their chance to take part in the development and progress of the clinic.

However, you must not relinquish complete control, give the staff member an objective (find the best 7 or 8), give them a time frame in which to do it (i.e. 7 days), and give instructions for what questions to ask.

This whole phase is about finding out if the person who applied for your role and their career goals, match up to what you can provide them.”

“The Success Description is a move away from the traditional “job description” that is the norm when it comes to recruitment. With the traditional job description there is no focus on achieving an outcome, and there’s often a vague understanding of what success even looks like.

Skills are confused with features (such as “must be hard working”) and, more often than not, job descriptions are focused on finding someone with experience. Which, you now know, doesn’t always guarantee a great candidate.

I’ve said it many times; you can always spot an employer who doesn’t really know what they’re looking for – they’ll advertise for someone with “experience”.

They think it is a safe bet, but it rarely works out that way. They’re often just more experienced at stuff you don’t need them or want them to do.

This Success Description is a physical document that you’ll create, and then have with you, throughout the entirety of the rest of the hiring process. When I am in hiring mode, this document is never too far away from me; it is either in my hand or on my desk right until the decision is made.

The printed PDF acts as my guide for the questions I will ask, reminds me what skills and competencies I am looking for, as well as reenforces what problem the people I am talking to will be solving for me.

It’s easy to forget or get distracted during the interview, and this document stops me from doing so.

What is more, when the Success Description is complete, I can use it to create the job ad that I’ll soon be posting (that we’ll cover in Chapter 8).”

That is the plan that we’re about to create in this chapter.

But please don’t be fooled by how simplistic it sounds. It is simple, but there’s a big difference between common sense and common practice, and that’s why I am inserting “create the hiring plan” right at the start of the process. Do not be tempted to skip this part, as it will cost you dearly later on…”

As business owners, what we really do is multiply capital (your money) by leveraging assets (your staff and marketing system). If I am hiring someone and I’m going to be paying him or her $25,000, I want to know what my return will be.

Before you get deep into the hiring process you want to know how much a hire is going to be worth to you. If you can see what you stand to make by hiring (or what you’re going to lose if you don’t do it), then you’re much more likely to be fully committed to the process and avoid all of the mistakes we covered in chapter 2.

This is called establishing the financial metric of success. You are answering the question, “how would I know if this was a successful hire?”

Think about that question for a moment… I suspect you’ll be tempted to write down things like the characteristics or qualities in the candidate that you are hoping to find. But, that is not what we’re talking about here…”

Physical Therapy Hiring Book: “The Structure Of All World-Class Companies”

“I remember a call I had with a clinic owner who reached out to me saying they had a “marketing problem”. The owner told me that he was the one doing the marketing for the clinic, so I asked him what his commitment to marketing was. He said, “$2000 per month.” I said, “no, what’s your real commitment – how much time do you invest? He said, “5-6 hours, or whenever I get chance.”

Now after doing this exercise with him, I said, “you do have a marketing problem – the problem is no one is doing any marketing!” I explained that, if he simply gave the same time and commitment to marketing as he does operations, he wouldn’t have a problem.

I then asked how long his clinic had been stuck for, and he said over two years. I asked why he hadn’t employed a full-time marketer, and he told me it was because he couldn’t afford it. Why couldn’t he afford it?

Because he was overstaffed. He’d employed more and more admin, expecting that they’d always be able to keep growing on the word of mouth stuff that they were relying on heavily.

And, of course, he thought like most clinic owners do that one of those admin staff members would step up and take over the clinics marketing or manage the social media channels. Marketing box checked. As for sales? Well, the ignorant assumption in health care is that the service somehow sells itself and so almost everyone overlooks needing to have someone in a seat who can talk about money and overcome objections to it.

The reality is that this is how most clinics are structured and is also why they’re stuck. There’s no understanding of what it actually takes to grow a company that is strong and stable – one that grows efficiently and profitably…”

Santa is a Kind, Generous Man – But He’s Not a Miracle Worker

Seasons greetings from England 🙂

I’m back in the UK for the festive season after another incredible few weeks of seminars and events that took place in Las Vegas and Orlando…

We had more than 250 clinic owners from all over the world come out to my Mastermind Event and Sales Bootcamp, and aside from battling the usual jet-lag, I’m excited to be back in the UK and looking ahead to 2019.

And it’s that which I want to talk to you about today.

What are your plans for 2019???

Like you, right now, I’m caught in the middle of 10,000’s of people who are “busy” planning and preparing for Christmas.

They’ve likely been planning for Christmas for months.

Everything from the presents, the decorations, the cards, the turkey – the family gatherings and social evenings with friends – are all PLANNED and/or already executed.

It was when my girlfriend’s mother told me how “ready” and how “prepared” she was for Christmas ALREADY (…this was three weeks ago when she was in Florida with us)…

…that it occurred to me that most people spend more time planning for a successful Christmas than most clinic owners ever spend planning for success in their business.

Would you agree?

Think about it…

How many people who own a business right now are taking the time to do things like create a Budget and then consider all of the marketing activities that will be required to hit that Budget?

And even work out a hiring plan that factors in the fact that what most business owners want (in terms of revenue), could never ever be achieved with the staff they’ve currently got.

(Very few is the answer).

And that, my festive friend, is THE reason why success will not come their way.

Lets go back to Christmas…

Most people will achieve their objectives this Christmas; presents will be under the tree, food and wine will be on the table and memories will be made with people they love.

Yet, it would never happen if people woke up on Christmas day and “wished” for it.

Santa is a kind, generous man – but he isn’t a miracle worker.

Most clinic owners will wake up on Jan 1st, 2019, wishing/hoping for that type of miracle to happen – just because it’s Jan 1st (…and that’s what everyone does, every year on new years, despite never getting what they want when they did it last year…).

One of the massive shifts I’ve made in my coaching programs in 2018 – that will continue into 2019 – is to move away from the “just take action” mentality (…that is killing business owners’ chance of success), towards a more disciplined and focused approach to building a solid business that puts PLANNING and THINKING at the forefront of everything that you do.

On January 22nd I’m holding a one-day seminar for 25 people and we will be doing 12 months planning in just one day.

Marketing Frustrations: Spending More Money Trying To Fix It

Just a couple of days ago my coaching team had another one of these types of conversations:

“When I first started Google Ads I didn’t get much response. I assumed that the reason was that I wasn’t spending enough money.

I doubled my budget, and then again and again, and yet still there was no real improvement in the response I was getting.

After three months, I’d spent over $3700 and got nothing in return.

I thought that if I just spent more money on marketing that I could make it work.”

This type of conversation happens a LOT on our Free Marketing Plan Strategy calls…

…PTs basically telling us that they THOUGHT/ASSUMED that the way to solve their marketing problem was to spend more money on their marketing – even though it’s not working.

Winning the lottery won’t fix an unhappy marriage and neither will spending more money on a marketing strategy that isn’t right.

Getting up an hour earlier and going to bed an hour later won’t automatically solve the problems in your business.

You just end up more TIRED while you are working on the wrong things and so the downward spiral begins.

Work even harder, make more mistakes, get no results.

Work even harder than harder, make more mistakes than before – still get no results.

In the case of Andrea, it was a WEBSITE issue…

To be more specific, it was a MESSAGE issue on her website…

And to be even more specific, it was a lack of matching up the message in the Google Ad to the Website.

Easy to fix – once you know how!

And yet, this type of thing is happening day after day after day after day to clinic owners who will wrongly assume that Google “doesn’t work for them”.

What’s the answer?

Have a PLAN in place BEFORE you spend any money on marketing.

When it comes to Marketing, if you do not have a PLAN for who you’re going to attract, what the message is, how many times they’ll need to see the message and many other factors that need to be considered when it comes to marketing your clinic, it really is doomed to fail.

“The Trip Of A Lifetime” – And How This PT Clinic Owner Achieved It

I’ve just come off the phone from talking with a PT Clinic Owner in Eagle Crest, Oregon…

He told me all about his summer vacation with the kids over to Europe.

His family took a flight from LA to Paris, into Belgium, onto Germany and Austria – finishing in London.

It lasted 3 weeks and involved six flights, trains, buses, Ubers, taxis, and hotels – an RV – a couple of nights camping in a tent as well as having to get the ferry over from mainland Europe to Dover, England.

Sounds like quite a trip, doesn’t it?

He told me that it was “the trip of a lifetime” and that all things went according to plan!

So I asked him:

“How long did you spend planning that trip?”

He said over a year.

It occurred to me right there and then that this business owner had spent longer planning his vacation than most owners do planning for business success. 

Think about it…

It seems that business owners want to do anything BUT plan for business success and yet when it comes to buying a house, a new car, going on vacation (all of the things are funded by the success of a business) those things are PLANNED for meticulously.

Over the last few years we’ve helped a lot of business owners find more success…

And one of the reasons we’ve done so is that we have been able to get them clear on what success looks like – and what must be done to achieve it.

Right now I am seeing a lot of activity/chatter/shouting online…

… I’m watching a lot of people telling you to “work harder” and “hustle” even more.

As if getting up one hour earlier and going to bed one hour later will solve your business problems.

(Really??)

I am going to suggest something radically different than that approach that won’t appeal to everyone:

Work smarter not harder.

Plan instead of hustle.

Think instead of reacting.

Any one of those three things is a much better strategy than depriving yourself of more sleep.

(If in doubt, ask the mother of a newborn baby how well she’s able to function the next day with no-sleep…)

I am proposing that you go back to basics and get a MARKETING PLAN that’ll set you up for sustained success in your clinic.
