Came a question earlier this week from Canada:<\/strong><\/p>\n

===<\/p>\n

\u201cPaul, What do you mean by \u201ccash-pay\u201d?<\/em><\/p>\n

– Marco Chiasson, Physio Max, New Brunswick (Canada).<\/strong><\/p>\n

===<\/p>\n

My Answer:<\/p>\n

Any time someone has to put their hand into their pocket\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026or reach for a purse or wallet\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026to whip out a crisp bill\/credit\/debit or visa card to fund in some way shape or form a contribution to, or pay in full for, a Physical Therapy appointment – then that is CASH PAY.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lets clear this up:<\/strong><\/p>\n

If they are making ANY form of contribution to the service you provide, out of their own pocket, then that\u2019s cash pay.<\/p>\n

(As the PATIENT sees it).<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s where the problems are arising\u2026<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a lot more difficult to run a PT Business when one person ENJOYS the treatment – and someone foots the bill.<\/p>\n

(AKA, the traditional insurance model that MOST clinics WERE built upon).<\/p>\n

But those days are all but over.<\/p>\n

Almost every single patient walking into a clinic today is needing to pay SOMETHING towards the service.<\/p>\n

All of a sudden, it feels a little different for the patient\u2026<\/p>\n

Especially if they\u2019ve assumed, or falsely believed, that they\u2019ll be able to have it ALL covered by insurance.<\/p>\n

(We take for granted that they actually read their policy before singing it\u2026)<\/p>\n

So when you tell me I need to pay my \u201c$50 co-pay\u201d – I\u2019m going to be paying that in cash, and usually with some form of resentment to doing it. <\/strong><\/p>\n

If you tell me you are \u201cout-of-network\u201d and I need to pay the $150 in full – then I\u2019ve paid you with cash.<\/p>\n

I just have to HOPE that I fill out the forms correctly to get my money back!<\/p>\n

The significance of \u201ccash\u201d?:<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a pain associated with handing over cash.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s why shops switched to credit cards\u2026<\/p>\n

Then it\u2019s why shops switched to \u201ccontactless\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n

(The less pain that\u2019s involved in paying for something, the better<\/strong> – they don\u2019t even want you hearing the beeps of your PIN anymore).<\/p>\n

The really bad news for Physical Therapists – is that we are primarily a \u201cgrudge purchase\u201d\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

They like us – but they don\u2019t really want to be there with us.<\/p>\n

And secondly, we don\u2019t give them a \u201cbox of stuff\u201d when they check out\u2026<\/p>\n

We give them a lot of \u201ceducation\u201d – we talk to them about funny things called \u201cnerves\u201d and \u201cligaments\u201d – but they don\u2019t always know how that equates to value.<\/p>\n

So the moral of todays story?<\/p>\n

If any single one of your patients is having to contribute in cash to fund your service – you are in the cash-pay game.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And that, my business building friend, and for all the reasons described above, requires a completely different game plan\u2026<\/p>\n

What type of game plan?<\/p>\n

A \u201cMarketing Game Plan\u201d of course.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How you let them perceive what you\u2019ll do for them BEFORE they show up determines how they show up.<\/p>\n

If they think you\u2019re \u201cjust another PT\u201d\u2026 they\u2019ll treat you like \u201cjust another PT\u201d.<\/p>\n

If they think you understand them better than anyone else – they\u2019ll treat you better than anyone else.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s simple – but very powerful stuff.<\/p>\n

And guess what?<\/p>\n
