Story Time:<\/strong><\/p>\n

So there I was in \u201cTampa Bay\u201d last week\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026visiting the clinic of \u201cRenewal PT\u201d (Greg Todd)\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2026when a couple of noteworthy things happened:<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> The owner of a PT clinic flew out to join the \u201cImpact Tour\u201d all the way from Memphis.<\/p>\n

She was not your typical owner\u2026<\/p>\n

Instead, a PT *ASSISTANT*, who owns her own clinic\u2026<\/p>\n

And,<\/p>\n

2<\/strong>. At the meet up, I heard the words:<\/p>\n

“We don\u2019t fit in\u201d\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

It was said by one of \u201c5\u201d students who came out from all over South Florida to meet me…<\/p>\n

(I was inspired to say the least).<\/p>\n

And, over a glass of \u201cwine\u201d, and a cold IPA, I got a glimpse of what the school system is doing (or not doing) to create more successful PTs\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Their gripe??<\/p>\n

\u201cNo business education\u201d.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

It seems that School is doing an amazing job at creating \u201cskilled\u201d practitioners\u2026<\/p>\n

The problem being, many who graduate feel unconfident at being able to start their own \u201cgig\u201d.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s no wonder\u2026<\/p>\n

PTs are never taught how to actually communicate what we do in such a way that people can confidently make a decision\u2026<\/p>\n

(So confident that they\u2019re happy to.\u00a0<\/em>
\nBecause that\u2019s all business is\u2026)<\/em><\/p>\n

An ability to communicate in such a way that people can understand what they\u2019ll get when they hand over an excess of $500<\/strong> – and give up 12-15 hours of their time.<\/p>\n

So why don\u2019t they teach you how to do that??<\/p>\n

Well, as I explained to the \u201c5\u201d students, it\u2019s a bitter pill to swallow when you\u2019ve just spent $150k on an education to be told you have to attend an entire semester on \u201chow to speak\u201d<\/em> so that people can make a decision on choosing you as a provider.<\/p>\n

The establishments argument is, \u201cyou now have a \u201cD\u201d before your name\u2026 that\u2019s all you will never need\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Really??…<\/p>\n

For a non-essential, non-urgent therapy, that most people see as a grudge purchase???\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anyhow\u2026<\/p>\n

As the conversation continued\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026it became more and more obvious that students ARE being told to \u201cadd more value\u201d to the lives of patients\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026BUT that it involves being a better, more skilled practitioner.<\/p>\n

I disagree. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Value is a *concept*\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s what ever the person you are speaking with at the time, decides it is\u2026<\/p>\n

It\u2019s increased by spending \u201cTIME\u201d to help someone understand the MEANING of how what is about to happen, is likely to affect them.<\/p>\n

Think about the typical process for how most patients find themselves as a \u201cpatient\u201d at a PT clinic – and you\u2019ll see that there\u2019s very little time factored in to help someone actually understand what the heck is about to happen to them\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and, what they\u2019re about to pay for!<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s my final thing: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Think about your own life\u2026<\/p>\n

If you have a problem, do you rush to see \u201cUncle Jim\u201d who is always too busy watching M.N.F to listen to you\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026or do you call on \u201cAunt Betsy\u201d who switches off the TV set and stops everything she\u2019s doing to listen to you at the first sign of an issue in your life????\u2026<\/p>\n

To be successful in the new health care economy you absolutely do need better business and marketing skills\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026but you also need to act a little more like your favourite Aunt Betsy\u2026<\/p>\n

TIME – and the ability to make a better decision because of that – is the thing your patients VALUE most.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Build it into your clinic modus-operandi and watch how easy it is to become more successful.<\/p>\n

Anyhow\u2026<\/p>\n

Lesson over\u2026<\/p>\n
