True Story:<\/strong><\/p>\n

So there I was in a queue for a cab on Friday night after watching the “Britney Spears” concert at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas…<\/p>\n

(She was awesome BTW!)<\/p>\n

In front of me in the line, were two girls – both in their early 20\u2019s – both having been to the gig and both staring at a photo of one of them with Britney.<\/p>\n

I politely asked:<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that real?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The girl in the photo replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cYes – I got it taken before the show\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

Me:<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much did it cost?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Britney Fan:<\/p>\n

\u201c$1500\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

Me:<\/p>\n

\u201cWOW!\u2026Was it worth it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Britney Fan:<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m a huge Britney fan – she\u2019s like my idol, and I always wanted to meet her and the photo turned out really well\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Me:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, was it worth it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Britney Fan:<\/p>\n

\u201cWellllllllllll\u2026\u2026 the thing is\u2026\u2026<\/em>
\nI was a little disappointed. <\/em><\/p>\n

I paid all the that money to have a picture with her and she didn\u2019t even take the time to ask my name or answer any of my questions\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n

Britney Fan:<\/p>\n

\u201cOUCH!!!!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Way NOT to make an impression on your bill payers!<\/p>\n

And it got me thinking\u2026<\/p>\n

In every profession, in every city, anywhere in the world, PEOPLE are motivated in the exact same way\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

We THINK we want EXTERNAL stimulation (like pictures with celebrities)\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and yet we judge how we feel about stuff, INTERNALLY. <\/strong><\/p>\n

This girl got her picture taken with Britney\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026but STILL left disappointed.<\/p>\n

Logical?<\/p>\n

Or course not.<\/p>\n

Normal?<\/p>\n

Yes.<\/p>\n

People are very “predictably irrational”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The lessons to be learned for PT\u2019s from this?<\/p>\n

There’s two:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> This girl admitted to me that she didn\u2019t really have the money to pay $1500 for a PHOTO – but she paid it any way.<\/p>\n

How many patients will this week tell you they can\u2019t afford you?<\/p>\n

(And how will you respond?!)<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> The girl paid $1500 for a photo – she got the photo, and yet was disappointed\u2026<\/p>\n

In our world we THINK (or are led to believe) that it\u2019s all about the OUTCOME – the relief from PAIN.<\/p>\n

The problem is, they judge you on EMOTIONAL and INTERNAL factors\u2026<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t believe me?<\/p>\n

Take one look at the review sites and you\u2019ll see that almost every review ever left – good or bad – is rarely about the thing that they were buying and is usually about how they were made to \u201cfeel\u201d…<\/strong><\/p>\n

(You book a hotel room for a good nights sleep – why leave a bad review about how long it took to check in??)<\/p>\n

So the question is, how do you take what I learned from Britney and apply it to make yourself more successful??<\/p>\n

Easy\u2026<\/p>\n

You start solving the INTERNAL problem FIRST.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How to do that?<\/p>\n

In your Marketing of course.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Acknowledging that you UNDERSTAND that THEY don\u2019t want to live on pills or risk losing their independence is a good place to start if your client is in his or her 50\u2019s – and suffering with low-back pain\u2026<\/p>\n

If your client is a CrossFit athlete\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026put it out that you UNDERSTAND the pain and frustration that comes with being told to rest from the gym – and promise to find a solution that lets them keep active while you fix the shoulder pain\u2026<\/p>\n

It\u2019s subtle marketing messages like this that checks the box for your patients and has them thinking \u201cthis guy or gal seems to get me… I think I\u2019ll give them a try\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s that easy.<\/p>\n

After that, it\u2019s up to you to put your great PT skills to great use.<\/p>\n
