Arlan Alburo, Valparaiso, IN.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>===<\/p>\n<p>I get asked this a LOT and my answer is always the same&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And I explain it best like this:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cNo I don\u2019t &#8211; and &#8220;thank you&#8221; to our patients?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s my honest thoughts on all this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whenever you see a business FEEL the NEED to to this, it\u2019s usually because that business has a *PROBLEM*.<\/p>\n<p>It either a \u201cculture\u201d problem.<\/p>\n<p>A \u201ctime\u201d problem (&#8230; not enough to sit down with staff and explain WHY this is now needed)\u2026<\/p>\n<p>A \u201clack of understanding of how people are motivated\u201d, problem (\u2026because the MONEY thing is second on the list for most staff)<\/p>\n<p>And, most definitely a \u201cleadership\u201d problem\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Because every time you add an extra incentive to the pay cheque &#8211; you\u2019ve made it almost impossible to ask them to do anything thing else in future without them FEELING like they should be compensated for it.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, that\u2019s going to lead to you hitting a BIG-old road block, at some point soon.<\/p>\n<p>However, if that employee is told<strong> right at the very beginning of the relationship\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2026with a firm tone and a sturdy look in the eye that their <strong>No.1 JOB is to support you and help you to achieve YOUR SAID GOALS&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;so that you can grow this business of yours in the fastest possible time frame\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026and that will require them to do various things that you don\u2019t even know exist yet\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026then you never have to do this extra money and incentive stuff!<\/p>\n<p>Because it&#8217;s now what they MUST do &#8211; just to keep their job!!<\/p>\n<p>Remember, they are doing this on the time that you\u2019re *already* compensating them for in the first place\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026so how and why is this ever needed?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll always go back to this one thing:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cHave you got the right staff<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>on the bus with you?\u201d\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The right staff APPRECIATE the fact that you are giving them new roles and tasks and that\u2019s because it means they are working in a \u201chealthy\u201d environment &#8211; and for a business that is successfully growing.<\/p>\n<p>The ones who DON\u2019T appreciate these new tasks &#8211; they\u2019ll push back because they FEEL as though you\u2019re asking them to do something EXTRA that wasn\u2019t in their \u201cjob description\u201d at the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>And if you accept it, it&#8217;s like letting the<strong> &#8220;inmates run the asylum&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s that you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tons of other PT\u2019s are doing it?\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Well, that\u2019s<strong> exactly why you shouldn\u2019t. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Their business illiteracy is your \u201cunfair\u201d advantage in the market place you\u2019re playing in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Get clear on why you\u2019re staff are employed in the first place\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;remind them of that REGULARLY\u2026<\/p>\n<p>..and sure, if they end up making a huge success of the new tasks you\u2019re asking them to do for you\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026reward them with a nice big fat pay rise or some extra time off at the end of the year!<\/p>\n<p>Call me old-fashioned &#8211;
