Comes a pressing question yesterday about \u201cstaff\u201d:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cPaul, I love what you say about making sure you have the right staff \u201con the bus\u201d\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u2026do you think that YOU have the right staff on the bus at your clinic right now?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

– Michelle, Bay Area, San Francisco.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

===<\/p>\n

WOW!<\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t see that question coming\u2026<\/p>\n

And the answer is this:<\/p>\n

\u201cNO… I DON\u2019T!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I NEVER have *all*<\/strong> of the right staff on the bus.<\/p>\n

\"Why<\/a><\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Because my bus is always moving faster than everyone on board would like it to be<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But that isn\u2019t a staffing problem\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026or a culture problem.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a \u201cprogress\u201d problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n

(And a great one to have!).<\/p>\n

See, it\u2019s unrealistic to think that everyone in your office is going to keep up with the changes and improvements that an owner HAS to make these days, to prosper.<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s “10” staff in my office\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026I work on the theory there\u2019s always at least “1” out of “10” who CAN\u2019T keep up\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and there\u2019ll be another “1” who doesn\u2019t WANT to keep up.<\/p>\n

Is that such a big deal?<\/p>\n

Course not.<\/p>\n

And I can fight it out WITH THEM\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026Or, I can recognize it, accept it – and then tackle it before it affects company culture and growth.<\/p>\n

I see a LOT of business owners stuck in a dog fight with staff who resist change\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and I get the impression that a lot of them think it\u2019s either a \u201cpersonal\u201d thing against them – that the employee doesn\u2019t want to change out of spite\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026OR, that as a business owner WE have to move mountains to get these people to buy in to our vision.<\/p>\n

Neither are true.<\/p>\n

The ONLY thing that we do is give them every opportunity to grow with us\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and THEN assess whether they will or they won\u2019t (get on board).<\/p>\n

And if they don\u2019t?<\/p>\n

I know from experience that siting down with that employee and explaining why I think it\u2019s in *THEIR* best interests if they get off the bus (and look for another job,) is usually the best course of next action.<\/p>\n

After that?<\/p>\n

Get back to driving the bus\u2026<\/p>\n

Because there\u2019s another employee more suited to the direction that your bus is headed in, waiting at the next stop.<\/p>\n

Aaaaalllll right, another PT business lesson over.<\/p>\n
